"Energy is power, coming from either nonrenewable and renewable resources. It is important to choose sources of energy that are environmentally-sound and socially beneficial."
What is energy, and why do we particularly stress the importance of green energy? Energy is defined as the ability to do work (EIA). Specifically, we can understand energy as the power that is derived from resources – either renewable or nonrenewable – that can be transferred between different states of matter and objects. Societal and industrial uses of energy include, but are not limited to, powering heat, light, and transportation.
Energy resources can be broadly separated into two categories: renewable and non-renewable energy resources. Renewable energy sources include solar, hydro, and wind energy. Renewable energy sources are important because they produce less emissions than fossil fuels, and can reduce the many impacts of the associated air pollution that comes with high emissions (such as public health effects). Further, non-renewable fossil fuels are finite resources; using renewable resources in place of fossil fuels is important in conserving them.
